The First WPT Events of 2026: A Quick Look at the Opening Stretch of the World Poker Tour Season

The First WPT Events of 2026: Opening Stretch of the World Poker Tour Season

The 2026 World Poker Tour season opened with a strong mix of major U.S. stops, international championship events, affordable special events, and high-profile tournament festivals. From Hollywood, Florida to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Las Vegas, and California, the early WPT schedule gave players several different paths into serious tournament poker.

These first events also show something important for developing players: tournament poker is not just about one big championship. The WPT calendar includes different buy-ins, structures, fields, and pressure points, giving players opportunities to study how professionals approach different stages, stack depths, and tournament environments.

January 16, 2026 — WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open Championship

The first major WPT Championship event of 2026 took place at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood in Hollywood, Florida. The $3,500 WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open Championship was part of the larger Lucky Hearts Poker Open festival, which ran from January 6–21 and included 57 trophy events with more than $12.3 million in total prize pools.

This event was one of the biggest early stops of the season because it combined a major Florida poker market, a strong guarantee, and a respected WPT Championship structure. Giuseppe Iadisernia won the event, earning $611,700, including entry into the season-ending WPT World Championship.

Why it matters:
This was the true opening statement of the 2026 WPT season. For players studying tournament poker, this type of event is a great example of why deep-stack discipline, patience, and final-table pressure matter.

January 17, 2026 — Special Event: WPT Wildcard Lightning Stack

One day after the Lucky Hearts Championship began, WPT also featured the $300 WPT Wildcard Lightning Stack at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood. This was a much lower buy-in special event, making it more accessible to recreational and developing tournament players. WPT listed the event as a one-day special event with a $300 buy-in.

PokerNews later reported that the event drew 124 entries, created a $31,000 prize pool, and was won by Wendy Horan for $5,671.

Why it matters:
Not every WPT-branded event is a $3,500 or $5,000 championship. Lower buy-in events like this give players a way to experience WPT festival energy without needing a major bankroll commitment.

January 29, 2026 — WPT Prime Cambodia Championship

The international portion of the early WPT schedule began with the $1,100 WPT Prime Cambodia Championship at NagaWorld Integrated Resort in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The Cambodia festival ran from January 21 through February 9 and featured both WPT Prime and WPT Championship events.

WPT Prime events are important because they offer a lower buy-in path into larger live tournament poker. PokerNews reported that Andrei Kalhin won the $1,100 WPT Prime Cambodia Championship.

Why it matters:
This event shows how WPT Prime creates a bridge between local/regional tournament poker and larger main tour championship events.

February 3, 2026 — WPT Cambodia Championship

After WPT Prime Cambodia, the main $3,500 WPT Cambodia Championship continued the festival at NagaWorld in Phnom Penh. WPT reported that Xiaosheng Zheng won the Season 24 WPT Cambodia Championship, earning $244,500.

This event gave the early 2026 WPT calendar a strong international presence and showed the tour’s continued push beyond U.S. poker rooms.

Why it matters:
International WPT stops are valuable study points because fields can play differently depending on region, structure, and player pool tendencies. For serious students of the game, these events are a reminder that poker strategy must adjust to the field, not just the cards.

February 19, 2026 — WPT Venetian Las Vegas Spring Championship

The WPT then moved to Las Vegas for the $5,000 WPT Venetian Las Vegas Spring Championship at The Venetian Resort. WPT Global listed the event as running February 19–24 with a $5,000 buy-in and a $2 million guarantee.

WPT’s event details listed the buy-in as $4,600 plus $400, with 60-minute levels and unlimited re-entry available until the start of Level 9.

Why it matters:
The Venetian stop is one of the most important early-season events because Las Vegas draws strong players, traveling pros, and serious grinders. A $5,000 buy-in also creates a different kind of pressure than smaller festival events.

March 29, 2026 — WPT Rolling Thunder Championship

The WPT Rolling Thunder Championship took place at Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Lincoln, California, with a $3,500 buy-in. WPT Global listed it as a March 29–April 1 event.

Alexander Farahi won the WPT Rolling Thunder Championship, earning his first WPT title. His prize included a $10,400 seat into the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas, and his name was added to the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup.

Why it matters:
Rolling Thunder is a strong example of how regional WPT stops can still carry major prestige. A win here does not just bring prize money — it also brings a WPT title, championship seat, and permanent recognition on the Champions Cup.

April 24, 2026 — WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown Championship

The early stretch closed with another major Florida stop: the $3,500 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown Championship at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. WPT announced that the full festival would run April 8–28, with the Championship taking place April 24–28 and featuring a $3 million guaranteed prize pool.

Seminole Hard Rock also promoted the event as a $3,500 buy-in tournament with a $3 million guarantee and televised final table.

Why it matters:
Florida was a major anchor for the early 2026 WPT season. Between Lucky Hearts in January and Poker Showdown in April, Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood remained one of the most important tournament poker destinations on the WPT calendar.

Final Takeaway

The first WPT events of 2026 gave players a little bit of everything: major championship buy-ins, lower-cost special events, international fields, Las Vegas competition, California pressure, and two major Florida stops.

For poker students, these events are more than headlines. They are reminders that tournament success requires more than knowing starting hands. You need to understand structure, stack depth, pressure, field tendencies, ICM, and how to adjust as the tournament changes.

That is exactly why studying a practical poker system matters. The better your process, the better prepared you are when the lights get brighter, the stacks get shorter, and every decision starts to matter more.
